1 Internet Bandwidth Donation Program For Education/Research
Networks This program is able to set up free Internet access plans for qualified accredited educational/research institutions and networks that will eliminate the cost of Internet access. The service that the program offers is an extremely high speed 1,000Mbps GigE Internet bandwidth plan useful for anything that requires large amounts of Internet bandwidth. Such service might be useful for the following:
(these are just a few examples, bandwidth usage is not limited to these applications) There are 2 donation programs that Hurricane Electric is offering: Free GigE 1,000Mbps Internet Bandwidth 1. 1,000Mbps GigE Internet pipe free to accredited educational institutions such as school districts, colleges, universities, and educational/research networks. In order to qualify, the educational institution must announce a minimum of 50 ip prefixes via BGP over the connection. Email kl@he.net or call 510-580-4171 for additional details to set up service. Ultra Low Cost GigE 1,000Mbps Internet Bandwidth 2. 1,000Mbps GigE Internet pipe for accredited educational institutions such as school districts, colleges, universities, and educational/research networks can receive a special discount for the ultra low cost of only $1/Mbps. This program applies to educational institutions that are not able to announce as many ip prefixes via BGP over the connection. Email kl@he.net or call 510-580-4171 for additional details to set up service. For comparisons sake, in the open market 1,000Mbps normally costs $20,000/month. This is a very generous donation that Hurricane Electric is willing to donate to your educational institution. Hurricane Electric's founder believes very strongly in the value of the educational institutions and their benefit to our society. Many educational institutions have had to cut programs due to budget cuts. Hurricane Electric believes that Internet access provides a very strong benefit to educational/research networks and institutions. This is something they can do to help educational institutions with their budget. Qualified educational/research networks can utilize this program with any size of Internet pipe that they want ranging from and including: DS3 (45Mbps), OC3 (155Mbps), OC12 (622Mbps), 100 Base T (100Mbps), and 1,000Mbps GigE. This special Gigabit Ethernet is available in seven locations in the United States and two locations in Europe: Switch and Data (PAIX) in Palo Alto, CA; Equinix in Ashburn, VA; Equinix in Chicago, IL; Equinix in Dallas, TX; Equinix in Los Angeles, CA; Equinix in San Jose, CA; Telehouse (NYIIX) in New York, NY; Telehouse (LINX) in London, UK; NIKHEF (AMS-IX) Amsterdam, NL. If your educational/research network does not currently connect to one of these locations, then a local loop point to point ip line can be installed from your network's nearest location to the nearest POP location. If this is needed, any carrier may be used. To set up this Educational/Research Internet Access Program the next step to email us back and let us know which program you are interested in (Option #1 or #2) and what your AS# is. Let us know which of the locations mentioned above you would like to receive the Internet bandwidth. Email kl@he.net or call 510-580-4171 for additional details to set up service. Program requirements and details are subject to change. This program may be changed or canceled, so call or email to confirm details.
